How to Unclog a Toilet

Check out the toilet before you sit on it!  Most people subconsciously do this every time anyway! But if looking at the toilet seat isn’t already part of your routine, check what's in the toilet bowl before you do your "business". If the toilet is usually on the emptier side and is now full of water, someone may have already clogged it. This could not only prove hazardous for you and your floor if you use it right away and flush. A peculiarly full toilet means that, as a precaution, you should use a plunger before you use it again.

After using the toilet, observe the initial flush. So you’ve done what you had to do, and now you flush the toilet… It might not be completely successful, but did the water travel down the bowl at all? Was there a painfully gradual trickle down after the bowl filled, or did the bowl just fill up with water, none of which escaped? The direction of this water can tell you a lot about the seriousness of your toilet clog. If all solid waste disappeared down the chute, followed by a slow water gurgle, then you might be able to let the drain clog fix  – as long as you know no one’s going to be using it anytime soon. But if the toilet bowl just filled up with water and none escaped then grab your plunger and prepare for battle! If the water is notably high, grab a bucket and a few of your thickest rags (not your favorites though).

Now take the plunge! Holding firmly onto your plunger shaft, firmly place the plunger mouth over the toilet chute. Placement is essential to get good suction on the plunge in order to create a seal and generate the force to unclog your toilet, you have to cover the drain with the plunger. Now, give the stick a solid push and bring it back up toward you.
