The ‘Things NOT To Do’ Plumbing List

When it comes to everyday activities, we all have our daily routines. From a plumbing standpoint, some of the things we do that we tend to take for granted can eventually haunt us in the long run.

Here are a couple of things to put on your “things NOT to do" list.

  • Most of us leave the water hose attached to the faucet. Now that it’s starting to get cold and our grass isn’t growing, that hose shouldn’t be a semi-permanent attachment to the faucet. Make sure you disconnect it from the faucet, as it can aid in pipes freezing.
  • It’s way too easy to pour cooking oil or grease down the drain. To many of us, that’s why the drain is there, to dispose of unwanted liquids and liquid hybrids. Truth is, the fats in the oils and grease can build up in the drain pipes, which equates to one of the primary reasons why clogs occur. Do yourself a favor and wipe down all pots before the oils or grease enters the sink. If you have a designated container for grease (pork, beef, etc.), use it.
  • Just because the job of a garbage disposal is to get rid of waste doesn’t mean you should push it to its limits. Try to keep large fruit peelings or large amounts of skin from poultry away from the disposal, as it can store food debris in your drain and clog it. When it comes to the large food items, just throw it in the trash can.
  • While we’re speaking about the trash can, let’s keep this in mind: The trash can is the trash can; the toilet is the toilet. They shouldn’t be used in both capacities. Baby diapers, paper towels, cotton swabs or sanitary products should not be flushed down the toilet. On the flip side, used toilet tissue should be flushed in an effort to keep your trash cans as empty as possible.

Keep these tips in mind, and your life will be a lot better down the road. Our plumbing experts in Lewisville TX can provide you more information if you have any questions. Feel free to call us, or contact us online for additional help.
