How to Replace a Toilet
Toilet replacement is something that many people want to tackle themselves. If you reach a difficult point during the installation and need some help proceeding, you can always contact a qualified Lewisville TX plumbing company. Otherwise, here are the steps for replacing a toilet:
- Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush the toilet. You may have to flush more than once to empty the tank and bowl of water.
- Remove any excess water with a rag or sponge.
- Locate the wing nuts that attach the toilet’s tank to the bowl. Remove these wing nuts. Sometimes oil is necessary to loosen the nuts.
- Disconnect the water line and remove the tank from the bowl.
- Remove the caps from the base of the toilet.
- Use a knife to cut through the caulking around the toilet base.
- Remove the toilet bowl.
- To determine the type of wax seal you’ll need for your new toilet, look at the wax seal for your old toilet. If in doubt, take your old seal to a hardware store for help.
- After putting the wax seal in place, fit the toilet bowl over the opening and rotate back and forth to set the seal. Check to make sure the bowl is level.
- Secure the toilet bowl to the floor with nuts and bolts. Put caps into place.
- Place the tank on the bowl.
- Caulk the base of the toilet.
