Dumping Dos and Dont's: Tips on Garbage Disposal Maintenance
Remember the scene in the '80's movie Firestarter when Drew Barrymore's character mentally wills her nemesis to stick his arm down the garbage disposal?
Large body parts--even small ones--are items that you want to refrain from depositing down the garbage disposal if you're trying to properly maintain it.
Seriously, many clients have wrecked their garbage disposals by trying to discard items that common sense tells them they shouldn't--especially when it comes to disposing of leftovers that previously resembled small animals.
Following is a short list of dos and dont's to follow when it comes to properly maintaining your garbage disposal:
DO run cold water ONLY when disposing of leftovers. Start running the water before turning on the disposal and let it run at least 10 seconds after the disposal is shut off.
DON"T dispose of large, fatty, or fibrous food wastes. These items should not go down the kitchen sink--they should be placed in containers or plastic bags and thrown in the trash. They include lard-like substances (e.g., fat, grease), large , hard bones like steak T-bones, and fibrous vegetables like artichokes and okra.
DO drop in ground citrus fruit peels on occasion to keep the sink area fragrant and reduce bacterial growth.
DON'T wait over two years to have a licensed professional plumber snake your kitchen drain line for preventive maintenance.
